What is Theory of Knowledge?
Every student entering the IB program has years of formal education and life experiences. Those experiences give rise beliefs, knowledge, and opinions, which continues for the two years of the International Baccalaureate program.
However, Theory of Knowledge is different. Instead of putting more value on those experiences, it teaches students to focus on the extent to which what they know what they claim to know.
The Theory of Knowledge course teaches students to become more aware and look at the world around them in a completely different way.
Through the IB TOK Program, students are able to re-evaluate previously trusted sources, challenge their assumptions, biases, and opinions, and become internationally aware.
The IB Foundation states that the purpose of Theory of Knowledge course is to encourage students to think critically about knowledge and make sense of what they encounter.
Theory of Knowledge isn’t philosophical or theoretical in form, although these may be considered. Rather, it builds on the experiences in the real world an encourage students to focus on knowledge issues that affect their lives in and outside the classroom.
How Do Teachers Assess Theory of Knowledge?
You will get your Theory of Knowledge course assessed, but not in the form of an exam.
The assessment requires every TOK student to do two things:
- Write a Theory of Knowledge essay based on a TOK prescribed title
- Do a TOK exhibition, which is a replacement of the Theory of Knowledge Presentation
The purpose of the exhibition is to demonstrate that you have the ability to apply Theory of Knowledge thinking to a real life situation. The presentation of your exhibit doesn’t get any marks. Your teacher marks the exhibition files, which is worth 33% of the total marks.
The essay, which takes a conceptual approach, must not be more than 1,600 words. Marked externally, the Theory of Knowledge essay is worth 67% of the total marks.
What are the Benefits of Learning TOK?
The Theory of Knowledge course seeks to help students to understand the nature of knowledge.
The course also looks into personal biasness and determines whether to revise, retain, or reject them altogether.
After two years in the International Baccalaureate Program, you are able to:
- Look into the diverse areas of knowledge and ways of knowing
- Examine the nature of knowledge and its role in your culture, other people’s culture, and the world around you.
- Look into how individuals work together to construct knowledge
- Understand the complexity of knowledge and become more acquainted to it
Given that the world is interconnected but uncertain, the Theory of Knowledge course will make it easy for you to recognize the need to act responsibly. In other words, TOK helps you to understand that knowledge requires responsibility, which translates to commitment and action. That way, it becomes easy for you to acquire and apply knowledge with great awareness and credibility.
Lastly, Theory of Knowledge teaches you how to make a critical approach to the construction of knowledge, academic disciplines, and the world.
