Rise and Fall of the Maya

Research Paper

  • This assignment is to be in the form of a six to eight page research paper.  Each student will choose a theoretical issue to research and critically analyze.  This can be (and should be) the same topic covered in your annotated bibliography.
  • Your paper should include a discussion of all perspectives on the issue as well as the perspective you feel has the best data to back it up.   In order to accomplish this task, you will need to examine and critique the relevant background information and latest research detailing work that has already been done on the subject.  You should have at least six peer-reviewed sources as references for your paper.  Many of these sources will be the same ones that you reviewed in your annotated bibliography.
  • As mentioned above, the paper should total at least six but not more than eight pages, and it must be typewritten in a 12 pt font with one-inch margins, double-spaced, and proofread for grammatical and spelling errors.  Don’t forget to number your pages, staple them together, and to include a cover sheet with the course, section number, and your name.
  • As with all formal papers, you should include a bibliography listing all the references you actually used for this paper.  Any standard format for the bibliography is acceptable as long as you give full information on the author’s name, the title of the book or article (including the book or journal in which the article appeared), year of publication, place of publication and publishing house, and inclusive page numbers.   Be consistent in the format you use for all your references.  The Healey Library Web Page has a tutorial that goes over different citation examples if you have questions.  Examples of different citation styles can also be found in Diana Hacker’s, A Pocket Style Manual
  • In the body of the paper, you should give citations for all quoted and paraphrased material as well as for any factual information or ideas that are not common knowledge in the field.  An easy format used in most anthropology journals involves parenthetical citations that are placed in the flow of the sentence.  For example: “Binford (1968:271) has suggested that Mousterian tools are . . . ” or “Mousterian tools are thought to be . . . (Binford 1968:271).”
  • Acknowledging the sources of your ideas is absolutely essential because to do otherwise is plagiarism.  This is a serious offense and one that I do not tolerate!!!!!!!!
