Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806-1861) wrote a series of books that she grouped in series called sonnets. The books were based on the great secrets of her intense love for her fiancé. She called her series “Sonnets from the Portuguese," which was based on a name given to her by Robert Bowling "My Little Portugee." Her poems are a reflection on her life especially the romantic part. This essay explores the nature of love and its power to overcome challenges in life including death, as expressed by Barrett. The paper concludes that Barrett’s love helped her to overcome all challenges as portrayed by the quote, “Guess no who holds thee… Not death, but love.”

Therefore, she was a good example that women could continue education successfully during his day. However, she learned from home where her brother would offer her Greek lessons. Through the gained knowledge, she was able to engage with literary and scholarly cultures in a serious way. She spends her young life in her father's home, but that did not prevent her from falling in love.
