Analysis of conflict at a city council meeting

August 24, 2018

Essay question and answer

Please read the full instructions. This paper should be written as if you observed the actual city
council meeting. There should be references to dialogue and how it demonstrated concepts within
the text reference provided. This is a critical analysis of the conflict as a whole, as observed…it must
be tied back to concepts within the text (Mayer)

The writer has the freedom to make up the conflict approaches that occurred at a city council
meeting over a debate about parking meter fee increases. I will provide a link to an article
highlighting some of the points from this meeting below, HOWEVER, please do not reference the
article in the paper, rather describe what the conflict could have been as if you had observed it.

The conflict should be complex enough to analyze using the concepts in the text provided and four-page
of analysis. The conflict approaches can be made up and the characters in conflict can be any of the
following: City Councilor #1-8 City Council President City Business Administrator City Attorney City
Resident #1-15 The five pages should be structured as indicated below, and the four references
should strongly tie back to the concepts “The Dynamics of Conflict" by Bernard Mayer.”

The writer must address the all points listed below, as the instructions are very specific. The two articles
that describes the parking meter fee increase proposal and the ultimate dismissal of the proposal
are:

THE FOLLOWING MUST BE FOLLOWED EXACTLY IN ORDER FOR THE PAPER TO BE ACCEPTED:

The body of the paper must be five (5) pages double-spaced and should include the following components. (It is important to note that I expect a critical analysis integrating Mayer’s principles of conflict management. One page should be sufficient to provide a brief analysis of the featured conflict(s) as required in #1.

At least four (4) pages should be dedicated to your in-depth analysis of the conflict issues you are dissecting and your conclusion which comprise questions #2 and #3 below.)

1. A brief description of substantive and procedural areas of conflict which will be analyzed in the paper

2. In-depth analysis of conflict using one or more of Mayer’s approaches.

3. A well-reasoned conclusion which includes student’s perspective as to what could be done to improve the conflict management procedures and techniques observed with supporting rationale.
